Project management

Clear ownership is the foundation of better delivery

A practical approach to turning a shared goal into visible responsibilities, useful updates and steady progress.

Ajibade Sunday Babatunde · Editorial draft

Start with the outcome, not the board

A project board can look busy while the project itself stands still. Before creating tasks, agree on the outcome: what needs to change, who needs it and what will count as done. That definition gives the team a reason to prioritise one task over another.

Break the outcome into deliverables small enough to review. A website launch, for example, includes content approval, development, testing and a clear handover—not just a single task called ‘launch website’.

Give each next step an owner

Every active task needs a person responsible for moving it forward, a realistic target date and a clear acceptance condition. Several people can contribute, but shared involvement should not become unclear accountability.

Tools such as Trello, Asana and Jira help make ownership visible. The useful part is not the number of columns or labels; it is whether someone can quickly understand what is ready, what is blocked and what decision is needed.

Make updates support decisions

A useful update explains what changed, what is at risk and what happens next. When work is blocked, record the dependency and the person who can resolve it. This keeps a status meeting from becoming a long recital of task names.

Begin simply: agree on the outcome, assign the next actions and review blockers regularly. Add more process only when it solves a real delivery problem.
